19/04/05 Damage from landfill fire estimated
at $1 million Franklin - The landfill fire that crews from more than 15 fire departments fought for 10 hours likely caused more than a $1 million in damage, officials said Sunday. Advertisement The fire started in a pile of pallets about the size of a football field and about 20 feet high at the Waste Management on S. 124th St. shortly after 2 p.m. Saturday, Franklin Fire Department Battalion Chief Ron Mayer said. The pallets were to be chipped, then dyed and sold as garden mulch. A stockpile of mulch as well as several pieces of machinery used to chip the pallets were damaged in the blaze, Mayer said. Authorities are investigating what caused the fire.
