2008-09-08 Man Killed By Falling Wood Pallets

A Valley father was killed in a freak accident Friday morning in front of his teenage son at a cabinet-making shop in Phoenix. The name of the victim has not yet been released. The man, with his son at his side along with other workers, were moving 50-pound pallets up to 25 feet high at Carlton Custom Woodworks in Phoenix when several of them came crashing down, said Courtney Jenkins with the Phoenix Fire Department."When our companies arrived on scene, the father was lying with his head in his son's lap, so it was a pretty sad incident," Jenkins said.Emergency workers were met by the son and other family members who started arriving at the shop near 31st Avenue and Indian School Road.An investigation is under way, but Jenkins said fire officials believe it was just a terrible accident."Many of us firefighters are parents and when we pull up to something like this it sure doesn't feel good," Jenkins said.Greg Gronowski works next door to the cabinet shop. He said he didn't know the 46-year-old man who was killed, but had seen him on many occasions and felt sorry for his family.
